What Are the Five Behaviors®
of a Cohesive Team?

The Five Behaviors model is derived from "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team"
by Patrick Lencioni. Lencioni identified five behaviors that will enable a team to operate efficiently and effectively if they maximize them.
These characteristics are:

TRUST

The Five Behaviors®

The behaviors stack on top of one another to form a triangle, building on the previous one and supporting the others. These behaviors show team members how they're performing and how they can become more cohesive.

TRUST

Trust sits at the bottom of the Five Behaviors Triangle. It's nearly impossible for a team to become more cohesive if they don't trust one another. Vulnerability-based trust, or being able to show your weaknesses, is essential to building relationships. Trust is necessary for teams to withstand and benefit from unique and routine challenges.

CONFLICT

Many people view conflict as dangerous, as it can lead to upset feelings. If your team has a solid foundation of trust, people will feel safe being honest about their feelings in contentious situations. Conflict can be constructive if you have trust in place. Conflict is important to ensuring that every aspect of an issue and all points of view are taken into consideration and discussed. Teams without conflict can overlook valuable feedback and make poor decisions.

COMMITMENT

Coming to a consensus means members of your team have compromised when making a decision. Compromise might not always lead to the best results. Commitment means you have a purpose when you make a decision. With conflict and trust, your team will pursue the best idea for their situation. Each person supports the idea that was chosen, even if there were more than one presented.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountability tends to be a difficult behavior for team members to master. Many teams don't arrive at the point where everyone can hold everyone else accountable for their actions. Maintaining and achieving good results in the previous behaviors will make this one easier.

RESULTS

Achieving your goals is the primary reason you have a team in the first place. Each team member will be focused on meeting your objectives if the previous behaviors are well functioning.
